Ingredients For Showerhead Cleaning

Cleaning your showerhead doesn’t have to take that many ingredients, believe it or not. With a few simple ingredients, you can have your showerhead looking and working great. These have been my go-to cleaning products for my showerhead for a long time now. I have got all of my family members and friends hooked on this exact cleaning process. I figured it was time to share with the world how I do it. It is seriously so simple and can be done within 20 minutes.

1. Bar Keepers Friend

Start out by giving it a gentle scrub with one of my favorite cleaners called Bar Keepers Friend. You can purchase it here! You can use the powder version, but I have found that the liquid version works better and is easier to use! This gives your showerhead a nice shine on the outside. Also, these products help to remove any build-up that is on the outside of your showerhead. I use a simple kitchen sponge, one just used for this process, and give it a gentle scrub all over. After I give it a good scrub, I wash it off under hot water. You are going to have to wipe away with your hands while running under the water to get all of the product off.

2. Vinegar and Baking Soda Soak

If you have never cleaned your showerhead with vinegar, now is the time to try it out. It helps to melt away all of those limescale deposits, especially if you have harder water. I typically use a big plastic bowl, just used for cleaning, with a little bit of baking soda added to the bottom of the bowl. Pour a generous amount of white distilled vinegar into your bowl and set the showerhead in so that the showerhead is halfway submerged in the baking soda and vinegar solution. You are mainly just soaking the holes where the water passes through, as those will be where the build-up happens. Depending on how dirty your showerhead is, will determine the amount of time that you need to leave it submerged. Start with about 10 minutes of soaking and check to see if it needs more.

3. Keeping your showerhead on:

If you don’t want to try and deal with taking your showerhead off, you can definitely use a big ziplock and add the vinegar and baking soda mixture to it and wrap it around your showerhead. I have used this method before as well and just use a rubber band to secure it. I prefer to unscrew it just so that it can get a better clean and rinse! Once soaked completely, rinse off the showerhead in some hot water, but make sure that you are giving a good rinse so you have no leftover vinegar. If you kept your showerhead on, you can give it a good rise with a pitcher full of hot water.

4. Isopropyl Alcohol

If you have a chrome showerhead, like me, you can finish the job off with some isopropyl alcohol. I typically add this to a soft microfiber towel and wipe it onto the showerhead. And the best part is you don’t need too much and you don’t have to wash it off. It will dry and leave the chrome with a nice streak-free look! After I have reconnected my showerhead, I run some super hot water through it for a minute or two just to make sure there is no leftover vinegar inside of the showerhead. If you do take off your showerhead, be sure to check the tape before reconnecting it because it will leak if not. It is always a good idea to replace that tape often! If you don’t know, the tape is there to prevent any leaking. You can purchase it here!

Now you have a super clean and disinfected showerhead that is ready for use! After you do it once, it will be the motivation for you to clean it on a regular basis. I know for me, it wasn’t something that I thought to clean regularly. Although, now do it once a week on my deep-clean Sundays, if you don’t want to do it that often, I would say 1-2 times a month would be just fine!
