Musts While In Caye Caulker, Belize
1. The Split
As I am sure you have came across in your search already, but the split is a must see, must do. Sitting at the split at sunset listening to good music is an incredible vibe that you do not want to miss. They have great food and great drink choices. Their cheese fries are to die for! May sound like a little bit of an exaggeration, but they are so delicious. If you are a drinker, their rum punch was my go to the whole trip. It is seriously yummy! They also have an amazing ceviche. If you are a fish person, you will love this dish! Really anything you order here, you can not go wrong with. They have a ton of seating with some even being in the water! We spent almost every night of our trip here when the sun was setting enjoying the music and meeting tons of new people! Don’t skip the split!
2. Feed & Pet The Stingrays
At the Iguana Reef Hotel, it is almost a guarantee every sunset you can see stingrays. This hotel allows anyone to go on their beach to see the stingrays. It is amazing at how many will come right up to the shore for a little bite to eat and a pet. They have a man out there with a bucket of fish a couple of times a week. If you are lucky to catch the night he is there he will give you some, at no cost, so you can feed the stingray yourself! It was such an amazing experience and the best part is that it is free! Yes, these stingrays are still dangerous so you have to be careful, but they were all really tame and just looking for their dinner! If you don’t hurt them, they don’t hurt you. At this same hotel, they have a dock and on the side of it is a seahorse reserve. They are hard to spot, but when you find some, it is so amazing to see them in their natural habitat!
3. Take A Boat Tour!
This is an absolute must. I am not a tour person. I am more of go with the flow and not have wake-up calls on vacation, but I promise this is one you won’t want to miss. There are many different tour guides to choose from on the island. You can’t go wrong with who you choose, as they are all so kind. We went with a couple of guys who at the time had no name for their guide business because we were first their customers! So unfortunately, I can’t tell you exactly who we went with, but I can promise you won’t be disappointed if you go. Our tour consisted of feeding the tarpon, snorkeling around the barrier reef, seeing stingray alley, and seeing the seahorse habitat. All this took about 3 hours and we only paid $25 USD a person. This includes the snorkel gear, flippers, and life vests.
We started with feeding the tarpon. These are giant fish that live for being fed. They give you a small fish to hold between your fingers and you wave it a little bit about the water. The fish jump up and take the fish right from you hand! It is a little scary, but incredible. After we fed them, we also fed the seagulls. We would hold the fish in the air and the birds would swoop down and take it front from you!
Next stop was snorkeling around the barrier reef. This alone took about 35 minutes to do, but worth every moment. My one piece of advice would be to take the life jacket that they offer. I am a great swimmer and thought I wouldn’t need it, but continually swimming for 35-40 minutes through waves gets a bit tough about halfway through. But the views are amazing! You see all sorts of fish, the coral, eels, and so much more. I can’t even put it into words how incredible it is to see all the sea life by the reef. When we made it back to the boat, our guides cut up a bunch of fresh fruit for us to enjoy on the way to our next stop.
We headed over to stingray alley. Here we got to get out and actually swim with stingrays and nurse sharks! It was just as nerve racking as it was incredible (haha)! The guides dumped fish into the water to bring a swam of sharks over to us. We stood right in the middle of them as they ate and got to pet and take picture with them. It was such a cool experience that you won’t want to pass up!
Lastly, our tour ended at the seahorse habitat. Here we got off the boat and walked the dock to spot all of the seahorse. It was amazing to see their habitat and to watch them swim around. It was the perfect ending to the tour.
4. Rent A Paddle Board/Snorkel Gear
Sounds simple enough right? We did this a few times while we were there. It costed us about $10 USD for a couple hours. Super cheap and super fun to do! This give your the freedom to go and checkout the things you want to see more of. We stuck on the back of the island most of the time as there weren’t as many people or boats and the water was a lot calmer. We were able to see so much more! We found conch, tarpon, starfish, other types of ocean fish, and so much more. Definitely a must if you love seeing the ocean life!
5. Take A Day Trip To San Pedro
There is only so much to do in Caye Caulker, Belize since the island is tiny. While the little island is plenty fun, a trip over the San Pedro was worth it! We caught a ferry that was about $40 USD a person round trip. A little more on the pricey side, but San Pedro is much bigger so there is quite a bit to do. If you chose to do a day trip, I highly recommend stopping for drinks at Hurricanes and grabbing some pizza from the Sandbar Beachfront Restaurant and Bar. Seriously the most delicious pizza I have ever had. If anything, make a trip just for the pizza. It is that good. We did a lot of shopping here as there are way more shops to get souvenirs. The vibes are completely different in San Pedro than in Cay Caulker. Its more fast paced and lots more people so a day trip is a good amount of time to spend if you are more about the small slow island vibes.
6. Go Bar Hopping
There are so many bars that line the whole island. They always have the best music playing giving off incredible vibes. Even if you aren’t a drinker, most of these places sell food too! You get the chance to meet so many different people from all over the world. The workers are always so happy and so kind. A few of our favorites were The Dock Cafe And Bar where there were swings and tables right in the water! Made the experience even more fun. We loved The Sings Bar which has swings right at the bar for seats. Had a fun atmosphere! Of course the split. You can never go wrong with heading to the split! Always good music and vibes there. If you are looking for more dancing and loud music, the sports bar is for you!
7. Enjoy Island Life
Probably not the idea that you came searching for, but life in caye caulker, belize is slow and happy. When you’re on vacation it is nice to take the days slow and soak it up as much as you can. Grab a fresh juice, ice cream, or some fresh fruit and find a nice relaxing spot on the beach with a good book and enjoy the ambiance of this amazing island. If you like a good coffee, I would recommend popping in at Ice ‘N’ Beans Café for an amazing coffee. They have hammocks, tables, and chairs overlooking the ocean for the perfect spot to take a breather and relax.
